This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A veteran of 1756 National Hockey League contests over the course of a career that spanned a total of twenty-five (25) seasons, Mark Messier would win a total of six (6) Stanley Cup's and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. The last active player to have played in the rival league of the World Hockey Association and also the last active player to have suited up during the 1970s, Messier would play in a total of sixteen (16) NHL All-Star Games during his time spent in the league. Offered here, we present this photo-matched Eastern Conference jersey worn by Messier at the 1997 NHL All-Star Game in San Jose.
Made by CCM, brand, "Made in Canada", size "56" and "Center Ice Authentic Collection" labels are all affixed to the inner collar of the teal, white, silver and black coloured Ultrafil garment, which has had both the CCM and NHL shield logos embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with an NHL Eastern Conference team crest that features embroidered details throughout its entirety, a 1997 NHL All-Star Game event patch has been placed over the right shoulder while a New York Rangers team crest graces the left one. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Messier's number "11" in dual layer tackle twill numerals, "Messier" is spelt out in matching style letters that have been sewn directly to the material at the top of the back.
Stamped with a 1997 NHL All-Star Game logo on the inside of the fight strap as well as the serial number of "714635", the jersey is one of five jerseys worn by Messier during All-Star Weekend for either the official photo shoot, pre-game warm-up or in one of the three periods that were eventually distributed to Ronald McDonald Charities, the NHLPA, the NHL, team (New York Rangers) and the player. Hailing from The NHLPA set of jerseys, it is known that that set was worn during either the 1st of 2nd period of play. Accompanied by a MeiGray LOA and COR, the jersey, worn for just a single period of play, shows excellent obvious game wear via stick marks over the lower front and both sleeves while additional marks/stains are seen over the lower reverse and in the front crest as well. Of note, a bit of red from the All-Star Game stamp inside the fight strap has been transferred onto the material insider the reverse hem where some pilling is seen as well, that is worth pointing out for accuracy. Having been signed by Messier with a large bold black signature on the interior of the jersey that displays without issue behind the front crest, the jersey has been photo-matched to an included digital image of Messier taken during the game to the large stick mark over the lower front.
