Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
The only player in history to captain two different clubs to Stanley Cup championships and the last active player upon his retirement in 2004 that witnessed action in the WHA, Mark Messier is a veteran of over 1700 regular season NHL games, with appearances made in an astounding 15 All-Star Games and a total of six Stanley Cup's to his credit. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007, offered here is this stick used by Messier as a member of the Edmonton Oilers during the 1983-84 season in which Edmonton won their first (1st) Stanley Cup in franchise history. A Sher-Wood S.O.P. 5030 model twig with "Messier" and his number "11" stamped over the upper shaft and having faded over time, the stick retains its original tape job of black around the handle and blade though it is important to note that the knob of the stick has been cut off and that most of the tape around the blade has been removed at some point. Displaying a date stamp reading "26 OCT 1983" on the underside of the shaft, two (2) pieces of velcro have been added to the shaft on the backhand side for the purpose of mounting. Still showcasing a mostly intact foil accent label around the bottom of the shaft, the stick shows evidence of game-use through a handful of marks and other abrasions throughout the length of the shaft, heel and blade, with the largest concentration around the bottom portion of the shaft and heel. Additionally, the top of the blade shows tape residue and minor chips while the bottom edge near the heel shows some wear and a crack that is worth mentioning for accuracy.
