Ancient hockey cabinet photo pictures members of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association hockey team in their winged-wheel uniforms prior to Lord Stanley donating his famous challenge cup. We peg this photo as circa early 1890's with no doubt some of the players having also been on the Montreal AAA championship team when the Stanley Cup was first awarded in 1893. The 1893 club captured the first Cup as a result of winning Canada' Amateur Hockey Association (AHA) title. Formed in 1886, the AHA was considered the top hockey league in all of Canada and by 1893 its schedule consisted of 20 games played among its 5 team members. Three Montreal teams, the AAA, Victorias and Crystals also competed against Ottawa and Quebec. On cardboard stock, the photo is in fair condition, having once been taped down the middle and now pasted onto a cardboard backing. The unidentified players number nine and are photographed along with 4 team officials. There are small pieces missing at the corners and some paper loss near the middle. Still an intriguing and thought-provoking look at period uniforms and equipment. And once framed, the rare piece will still be a welcome and worthy addition to a vintage photo collection.
