Often referred to as Manitoba's all-time greatest athlete, Donald H. "Dan" Bain was a champion roller-skater, gymnast, bicycle racer and trap-shooter. In hockey annals he's regarded as one of the greats who never played professionally. Center and captain of the Stanley Cup champion Winnipeg Victorias in 1895-96 and 1900-01, Bain led his team in 4 Stanley Cup challenge rounds. This portion of a cancelled Bank of Nova Scotia cheque features his "D.H. Bain" signature and has been applied to a blank index card. One of hockey's early heroes, Bain died in 1962.
