The Marcel Dionne's Auction - October 2004
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/19/2004
Another shocking piece of hockey history from the personal collection of hockey author and broadcaster Brian McFarlane, this gem is from game 2 of the epic 1951 Stanley Cup finals between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens in which each of the 5 games required overtime. The legendary Rocket Richard scored the winner in this 3-2 game and historians are well aware of how Bill Barilko scored the Cup-winning goal in game 5 before disappearing and dying in a plane crash the following summer. Barilko's smiling face on the cover is joined by his signature just below his chin and those of his teammates. They include Broda (who signed twice), Kennedy, Watson, Bentley, Meeker, Mortson, Smith, Sloan, Rollins, Klukay, Flaman, Mackell, Juzda, Lewicki, Hassard, Thompson, Timgren, and Gardner. The 84-page program features the Leafs' usual excellent content and grades "VG". Truly stirring is the thought of Barilko and others handling and signing this book and then drinking from the Stanley Cup exactly one week later!
