The 1987 Canada Cup tournament's legacy as one of the most exciting international hockey competitions ever is in large part due to Mario Lemieux. It was after his 3rd NHL season and in the fall of 1987 that Mario made the first of several memorable impacts on the game of hockey. Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky combined on a breathtaking play that was capped off by Mario "roofing" one for the game-winner as Canada edged the Soviet Union 6-5 in game 3 of the best-of-3 tournament finals. With the exception of Paul Henderson's historic goal in 1972, it was perhaps the most dramatic goal in Canadian international history. But the legend is far more than that single goal, for Lemieux potted a total of 11 in 9 games with Gretzky assisting on 9 of them. Following those important weeks alongside Gretzky who challenged Lemieux to be the best that he could be, Mario went out and posted the 2 most productive seasons of his NHL career, including an 85-goal, 199-point season in 1988-89. Lemieux's red Team Canada jersey that he wore in the '87 Canada Cup is an air-knit affair with "CCM" embroidered into the rear hem and a Maska tag in the neck. The Team Canada logo on the front and the maple leaves on the sleeves are screened-on while "66" on the back and "M Lemieux" across the nameplate are in white tackle twill and sewn-on. A Labatt Canada Cup patch is sewn on the right breast. The fabulous shirt shows the marks of international battles with black stick/slash marks littering the front and sleeves, notably sizeable slashes on the upper left sleeve and shoulder. There are no snags or holes to mention. Proudly worn by a man who had no rival in many facets of the game, the jersey is a captivating reminder of stuff legends are made of. The highlight of Hockey Canada executive Marvin Goldblatt's personal jersey collection, it will be accompanied by his signed letter of authenticity.
