Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/29/2025
Depicting the early game in all it's glory, we offer a marvelous collection of framed antique hockey magazines, ads and displays totaling 9, including two by famous artist J.C. Leyendecker. Included, we have an original 1910s felt hockey crest. At approx 6" x 10" with sewn on felt letters along with crossed hockey sticks and a winged "G", the crest appears to never have been used (12" x 14 1/2"). Next, we have full magazines including The Saturday Evening Post from January 1908 with classic cover by Leyendecker (18" x 22"), Physical Culture from Dec 1901 (10" x 12", worn condition), and Work and Win from Dec 1909 (13 3/4" x 16 3/4", ultra violent cover). This is followed by a trio of advertisements taken from publications including Kuppenheimer Clothing by Leyendecker circa 1920s (18" x 22"), Harper's Bazar cover from 1900 with New York female players (17" x 21") and a Lucky Strike cigarette ad with New York Americans star and HOFer Billy Burch from 1928 (13" x 16 1/2", this was a black & white ad that has been hand-coloured - making it unique). Lastly, there is a large picture of a circa 1920s player (21" x 25", wear to the frame), and an article from Harper's Weekly in 1895 explaining the game of hockey - with this one of the earliest depiction of the game. Famous teams mentioned in the article include the Montreal Victorias, Montreal Crystals and Ottawa Generals (Senators). There is also artwork to the matte (20" x 24", glass cracked along top).
