Losing to the Russians in the final round of the 1989 IIHF World Championships 5-3, which cost the Canadians the gold medal, this would be the Soviet's 21st title, and first of two before the unified nation was dissolved. Brian Bellows would lead the tournament in scoring, and at it's conclusion, Russian star Alexander Mogilny would defect to the United States by getting on a plane with two Buffalo Sabres executives. We present a 1989 IIHF World Championship gold medal. Measuring 2 3/4" in diameter with the original blue and yellow ribbon attached and "1989" to the bail, "World Championships" appears in raised letters circling the perimeter on the obverse along with two generic players. Featuring a painted globe IIHF logo with crossed hockey sticks on the reverse, it is encompassed by "International Ice Hockey Federation" in matching style raised letters. The medal displays beautifully and remains in near mint condition.
