Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2025
Produced in conjunction with the with the T3 set, exhibiting numbers 51-76 of the 126 card release, the iconic set focuses on the top prizefighters of the day, which were introduced after the first fifty (50) cards of the set were issued featuring the top players of Major League Baseball. Revered for their beautifully detailed color depictions of their subjects along with thoughtful
backgrounds and ornate borders plus the fact that the release is chalked full of Boxing Hall of Famer's, offered here is this pair of oversized cards from the 1910-11 T9 Turkey Red release of Jimmie Gardner and Abe Attell which have both been graded by SGC. With the card of Gardner depicting him in an attacking pose ready to throw a punch, it has earned a mark of VG+ 3.5 after its inspection while the example of Attell shows an image much the same, with the boxer, who is enshrined in the Boxing Hall of Fame, likely more notable for being the he bag man for gambler Arnold Rothstein during the Black Sox scandal of 1919 in which White Sox players were given $10,000 to throw the World Series with Cincinnati. When the scandal broke in 1920, Attell went to Canada for a year to avoid being subpoenaed and Rothstein was never indicted for the crime. Earning a mark of VG 3 for its effort, both cards are housed in oversized older SGC holders that show some scratches and scuffs over both sides that are worth mentioning for accuracy.
