Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024

A product of the WCJHL's Moose Jaw Canucks who turned pro with the WHL's Vancouver Canucks, Larry Popein would go on to play a total of 449 games in the National Hockey League with the likes of the New York Rangers and California/Oakland Seals, playing all but forty-seven (47) games in the bright lights of Manhattan as a member of the Blueshirts. A quiet center on a powerful line that included Andy Bathgate and Dean Prentice who was a solid body checker and a skilled passer, offered here is this photo-matched Rangers sweater worn by Popein during his time with the club in the mid-1950s. A wool construction garment made by noted sporting goods supplier, Gerry Cosby, the brand's label as well as the tattered remains of a size tag are still affixed inside the hem at the left hip. A classic tie-neck style piece that measures out to roughly a modern size "40" for its effort, the front of the bright blue shirt is decorated with "Rangers" going diagonally down the chest in dual layer red-over-white drop-shadow tackle twill letters. Void of any numbers on the sleeve, something the Rangers started doing beginning with the 1958-59 season and helping date the jersey to being between 1954-55, Popein's rookie season, and the 1957-58 campaign, Larry's number "19" has been added to the reverse in matching style dual layer red-over-white drop-shadow tackle twill numerals. Displaying with excellent game-wear throughout, including greater than twenty (20) team repairs over the front, reverse and both sleeves, the jersey also shows numerous holes in the wool throughout its entirety as well as the odd spot stain here and there. Also showing copper coloured stains on either side of the collar and stick marks in the "R" of "Rangers" on the front of the piece, a stamp appearing to read "5504" is found inside the reverse hem while pilling is present throughout the interior as well. Regarding the photo-match, the jersey is matched to an included image of Popein that shows the specific details and wear patterns of the letters "RANG" of Rangers and to the team repair on the left side of collar as well. A wonderful wool example, don't miss out on this beauty from a bygone era of the National Hockey League and the Original Six.
