Born in Chelyabinsk, Russia and growing up behind the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War, Sergei Mylnikov would become the first goaltender born in the Soviet Union to play in the National Hockey League, tending the crease for a total of ten (10) games during the 1989-90 season for the Quebec Nordiques. Having had his international debut delayed due to a clogged Soviet crease that included the talent of Vladislav Tretiak and Vladimir Myshkin, Mylnikov would finally find himself on the international stage in 1985 and go on to help his country to a gold medal at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games. Also participating at multiple IIHF World Hockey Championships, offered here is this Soviet Union jersey worn by Mylnikov at the 1989 IIHF World Championships in Sweden that resulted in a gold medal. Made by Tackla, a lone size "XXL" fly tag is affixed to the inner collar while the Tackla logo has been sublimated into the material of the jersey at the right breast. Featuring double layer sleeves, the letters "CCCP" appear sublimated into the material over the front with Mylnikov's number "1" is present over the sleeves and verso in matching style. Of note, the lack of "Allianz" sponsorship patches over the sleeves and the higher number placement helps date this jersey to the 1989 tournament. Having had "Mylnikov" spelt out in white letters that have been sublimated into the material of the affixed matching red mesh nameplate at the top of the reverse, it is worth pointing out that there is evidence of former nameplates over the upper reverse as well. Displaying with good game-wear, sweat staining appears around the collar of the piece while other spot stains are found throughout as well. Also showing additional wear via stick marks over the reverse and both sleeves, a board burn is found behind the left arm pit and red paint transfer marks are present at the right cuff.
