Perhaps the greatest player the game of hockey and the National Hockey League has ever seen, Mario Lemieux needs no introduction and during the 1980s and 1990s was the only one capable of holding a candle with the likes of Wayne Gretzky and his greatness. Returning to the Pittsburgh lineup during the 2000-01 campaign after retiring three (3) years earlier, Lemieux followed up his 76 points in 43 games played with 31 points in 24 games played in 2001-02 and 91 points in 67 games played in 2002-03, missing time due to nagging injuries and the 2002 Winter Olympic Games where he captained Team Canada to their first Olympic gold medal in fifty (50) years. An inductee of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and finally retiring from the National Hockey League for good following the 2005-06 campaign, offered here is this pair of gloves worn by Lemieux in the era of the early-2000s, circa late in the 2001-02 or during 2002-03 seasons of play. Nike Quest 1 model mittens in a simple black and white colourway, the gloves feature an all nylon material construction while leather portions are observed over the top of both the hands and fingers. Displaying Nike swoosh logos over the backside of both hands, "M. Lemieux 66" has been embroidered in to the cuff of each glove. Displaying game-wear via some light stick marks over the outside of each glove, the palms both show rubbing and darkening from Lemieux's black tape job and black coloured sticks with the heaviest amounts found in the palm of the right glove while the left one shows an area of heavier rubbing that would have resulted in a small hole if they continued to be worn, something that we have seen on other examples of this model.
