Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Regarded by many to this day as the greatest hockey player to ever lace up a pair of skates, the name Gordie Howe is synonymous with the game loved and played by so many across the world. In a career that spanned over five different decades from 1946-71 and 1973-80, fans and players alike will still find Howe’s name near the top of the all-time leaderboards all these years later. Also still one of the most collectable and collected players in the hobby, offered here is this trio of buyback cards that was interested into packs of Upper Deck's 2004-05 SP Legendary Signatures product. All hailing originally from the 2001-02 Upper Deck Legends release, the group includes a pair of "Timeless Tributes" memorabilia cards that picture Howe during his time in the WHA as a member of the Houston Aeros, both cards have had swatches of fabric cut from an Aeros sweater worn by Howe, either blue or white in colour, embedded into the front of them while both have also been signed by Howe over the front with blue marker ink signatures that display without issue and have been serial numbered "02/10" and "07/10" in matching blue marker ink respectively. With both also sporting Howe's famed "Mr. Hockey" moniker, penned by him in blue marker ink that matches the autographs, the pair of cards are joined by a "Pieces of History" stick card from the same 2001-02 UD Legends release that shows an image of Howe over the front from the 1950s when he was playing for the Detroit Red Wings. Featuring a sliver of stick cut from a weapon wielded by Howe over the front, the hockey legend has signed the card along the bottom with a blue marker ink signature that displays well despite some shakiness. Also showing the familiar "Mr. Hockey" inscription that accompanies most Howe signatures, the card has been hand serial numbered "4/9" at the top right corner ink blue marker ink. All highly desirable and remaining in excellent condition overall despite remaining in a raw ungraded form, each has had an Upper Deck hologram affixed to its reverse and is accompanied by a matching UDA COA. Additionally, it is worth noting for accuracy that light edge and corner wear is still observed throughout the group but not in a way that detracts from their overall eye appeal.
