A veteran of 1756 National Hockey League contests over the course of a career that spanned a total of twenty-five (25) seasons, Mark Messier would win a total of six (6) Stanley Cup's and be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. The last active player to have played in the rival league of the World Hockey Association and also the last active player to have suited up during the 1970s, Messier would play in a total of sixteen (16) NHL All-Star Games during his time spent in the league. One of the greatest leaders in NHL history, Mark Messier spent three productive seasons in Vancouver beginning in 1997-98, captaining the club for his entire tenure on Canada's west coast. Offered here, we present this Canucks jersey worn by Messier during the 1999-2000 season, his last with the club. Made by CCM, a "Made in Canada" brand label that displays a thin washed out number "11" in black marker is affixed to the inner collar along with a size "56" fly tag as well. Having had both the CCM and NHL shield emblems embroidered into the reverse hem, the front of the jersey has been decorated with a familiar Canucks orca whale team crest that features embroidered and textured details throughout while the distinguished captain's "C" rests over the left breast and the NHL2000 patch that was worn by all the league's team's throughout the season have been placed over the right breast. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Messier's familiar number "11" in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals, "Messier" is spelt out in single layer silver twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Sporting a Canucks “1999 2000 Game Worn Limited Edition” team patch sewn inside the reverse hem, the fight strap on the interior shows black marker ink annotations reading "S.J" and "COL." as well as Messier's number "11". The Canucks played the Avalanche three times on the road during the 1999-2000 season and twice they visited the Sharks. We believe the annotations on the fight strap refers to the games played on March 20th 2000 vs the Colorado Avalanche and on March 22nd 2000 vs the San Jose Sharks. Exhibiting overall good game-wear for a jersey likely to have been worn in only a couple of games, there is a 5" long thick bold black mark over the lower front of the jersey, a pair of 1 ½” marks in the silver striping over the lower front and a few small material snags in the same area. Additionally, there are half a dozen or so faint small marks that are visible over the sleeves, with a few more visible on the front of the jersey, and a dozen small material snags/pilling spots that are showing on the left breast/shoulder/upper sleeve area. Originally owned by Dave Schima, who was an assistant medical trainer with the Canucks from 1991 to 2000, Messier has signed the numbers on the reverse with a black marker ink autograph that displays without issue as well as a personalization reading "To Dave, lots of luck!" in matching ink and condition. Accompanied by an LOA signed by Schima, a Classic Auctions LOA will also be included from the original sale.
