Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/26/2024
Originally born in Caracas, Venezuela before moving to the United States, Rick Chartraw would play his junior hockey as a member of the OHA's Kitchener Rangers and become the first American selected in the first round of the National Hockey League draft when the Montreal Canadiens took him 10th overall in 1974. Helping Les Canadiens to a quartet of Stanley Cup championships before adding another with the Edmonton Oilers, offered here is this Montreal Canadiens jersey worn by Chatraw during the 1975-76 season. A durene knit garment made by Wilson, a brand label displaying a size "48" designation is affixed to the inner collar while a garter belt style fight strap has been added to the interior reverse. Decorated over the front of the jersey with Montreal's famed "CH" team crest in layered tackle twill, the 1976 Olympic Games patches that were once placed atop of both shoulders have long since removed though the outline of each can be seen on the interior. Showing no clear evidence of a nameplate ever having been sewn on over the upper reverse, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Chartraw's number "27" in dual layer blue-over-red tackle twill numerals. Of note, Chatraw started the season wearing number "2" before switching to "27" beginning on February 29th, 1976. Previous to this, Sean Shanahan wore the number for a total of four (4) games in November and once in January with this jersey likely worn by him as well. Displaying good game wear, stick marks and coloured board paint transfer marks are present over the front, reverse and both sleeves while small unrepaired holes and fabric runs are found over the front, both sleeves and the lower reverse. Also showing board burns over both sleeves and some staining/discolouration over the lower reverse, it should be noted that the white parts of the jersey have become discoloured from age and numerous washings when it was in use. Finally, pilling/fabric rubbing exists over both cuffs and on the interior. A Classic Collectibles LOA will accompany.
