Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
A product of the Toronto Marlboros who helped the junior club to a Memorial Cup in 1975 that was then drafted 10th overall in 1977 by the Montreal Canadiens, Mark Napier would actually get his first taste of professional hockey with the Toronto Toros of the World Hockey Association, playing three (3) seasons in the rival league before joining the NHL ranks and Montreal in 1978-79, helping the Habs to a Stanley Cup championship. A veteran of over 1000 professional hockey games between the NHL and WHA who suited up for other clubs such as the Minnesota North Stars, Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres, offered here is this Edmonton jersey worn by Napier during the 1986-87 season before he was traded east to Buffalo. A mesh constriction garment made by a company called Athletic Supply that sports Nike branding screened-on over the reverse hem, a Nike brand label that displays a size "XL" designation is affixed to the inner collar. Decorated over the front with a familiar Oilers team crest in flight satin twill that also features embroidered details as well, the sleeves and verso of the garment have been styled with Napier's number "65" in stacked tri-layer flight satin twill numerals with the white coloured layer embroidered/stitched. Having had "Napier" spelt out in single layer blue flight satin letters across the affixed matching mesh nameplate that runs virtually from shoulder-to-shoulder across the upper reverse, the jersey, utilizing a loop and skate lace style fight strap on the interior, has had its sleeves shortened to Napier's liking and hails from the Michael Wexler collection/purchase of the Oilers archived inventory.
Exhibiting overall good game-wear, stick marks are present over the front, reverse and both sleeves while a pair of team repairs are found over both sleeves as well. Also sporting a light board burn over the left sleeve, heavy pilling is featured throughout the interior. Appearing to be photo-matched to an image of Napier taken during the season that seems to show the stick marks in the top white stripe of the left sleeve underneath the numbers, the image is not clear enough for us to call it a definitive photo-match. An Oilers LOA and MeiGray COR will accompany the piece.
