Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Hailing from a trio of seasons that saw the Montreal Canadiens finish their run of four (4) straight Stanley Cup championships and the New York Islanders beginning their own run towards a quartet of Lord Stanley hoistings, offered here is this collection of O-Pee-Chee hockey cards from 1977-78, 1978-79 and 1979-80 that totals out to over 2500 examples.
Starting with the earliest of the three (3) sets represented, the group of cards from the 1977-78 season totals out to approximately 700 to 750 cards that are mostly in the condition vicinities of EX, EX-MT and EX-MT to NM for their efforts. Void of anything real expensive, the group features key names such as Orr, Trottier, Gillies, Potvin, Smith, Cheevers, Bucyk, Ratelle, Salming, P. Esposito, Dionne, Clarke, Parent and many others.
For the cards from 1978-79, coming in at approximately 550 to 600 cards in total, a mix of condition scopes are featured including those of VG, VG-EX and EX. Including a number of key names, those present are Bossy, T. Esposito, Smith, Vachon, P. Esposito, Gainey, Lapointe, Cournoyer, Savard, Shutt, Lafleur, Sittler, Barber, Parent, Clarke and others. Finally, for the group of cards from 1979-80, the set totalling out to approximately 1300 to 1400 cards in all, the set is obviously best known for the Gretzky rookie, which isn't included here. Found to be in a wide range of grades throughout, including F, G, VG, VG-EX and EX, some of the key names present are Howe, Hull, Smith, Semenko, Bossy, Gillies, Gainey, Robinson, Ratelle, Cashman, Salming, McDonald, Sittler, T. Esposito, Clarke and Keon plus various checklists, highlights and leaders cards. A neat collection of some late-1970s beauties, it is also worth noting that there are duplicates throughout the entire group.
