Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/26/2024
A year of Major League Baseball that saw the Baltimore Orioles defeat the Cincinnati Reds in the 67th edition of the World Series, the 1970 Topps baseball release featured a checklist with a staggering 720-cards for youngsters to chase, the largest set from the company to that point in time. With Thurman Munson being the key rookie card of the release as well as those of Vida Blue, Bill Buckner, Hal McRae, Bill Russell, Larry Bowa, and Darrell Evans, the changing times were immediately realized as the 1970 Topps Baseball set saw the first price increase for a wax pack since 1952. To lessen the impact of the jump in pack price from five cents to ten, Topps included three different insert sets. Each wax pack contained either a player biopic booklet, a poster or a Scratch-Off game card. Offered here, we present this lot featuring a total of over 140 of the 1970 Topps baseball scratch-offs inserts and over 70 of the story booklets from the same year.
Beginning with the scratch-offs inserts, totalling out to over 140 examples with an additional half dozen more that have been scratched on the interior also included, the group includes one (1) full complete set as there is only one (1) copy of #24 featuring Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox included. In terms of condition, he unscratched ones appear to be mostly mid-grade examples. With some of the included ones having a few examples and others having many, we will show a quantity count list on the auction listing to show a full breakdown of how many are included of every player.
For the story book inserts, totalling out to greater than 70 examples overall, the group is missing any offerings of 15-Rose, 17-Singer, 18-Staub, 19-Jones, 20-Johnson, 22-Gibson, 23-Ferrara and 24-Mays but does include key specimens of 10-Jackson and 14-Banks. Also all appearing to be mostly mid-grade examples like the scratch-offs profiled above, some have just one or two included examples while others have many and a quantity count list showing a full breakdown will be included on the auction listing.
