Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
The only player in history to captain two different clubs to Stanley Cup championships and the last active player upon his retirement in 2004 that witnessed action in the WHA, Mark Messier is a veteran of over 1700 regular season NHL games, with appearances made in an astounding 15 All-Star Games and a total of six Stanley Cup's to his credit. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007, offered here is this stick used by Messier as a member of the Edmonton Oilers during the 1985-86 season in which Edmonton won their second straight Stanley Cup championship. A Sher-Wood made P.M.P 9030 model with "Messier" and "11" stamped over the shaft, the stick retains its original black cloth tape job over the handle plus knob while the black tape that once covered the entirety of the blade has long since been removed to facilitate Messier's bold blue marker ink signature that displays well and without issue despite its age. Also having added an annotation reading "Best Wishes Always" and the year, "85", in matching ink that displays in the same condition, the stick also still sports its foil accent sticker over the bottom of the shaft. Displaying with a date stamp that reads "30 AVR 1985" on the underside of the shaft, the stick shows just light game-wear through a small number of light marks and abrasions throughout while small areas of tape residue are present over the top and bottom of the shaft from multiple sticked being bundled together in transport.
