Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/26/2024
Hailing from a prominent Philadelphia family and the epitome of an attractive blond-haired All-American, Hobey Baker excelled at sport while attending St. Paul's School in Concord, later starring on both the ice rink and gridiron for Princeton. Three successful years would be spent in the Ivy League, with his most notable accomplishments never fumbling a punt for the Tigers, and never losing to Yale. Baker would then add heroics to his growing legend, receiving the Croix de Guerre from the French government for his service as a fighter pilot during the Great War, later losing his life in December of 1918 during a test flight. Widely recognized by contemporaries as one of the greatest natural athletes, Baker would be one of the first nine players inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame upon its founding in 1945, and the only American. We offer a 1914 Princeton photo album that features team photos of the 1913 Tigers and 1914 Freshman football as well as the 1914 hockey team all including Baker, accompanied by a page with composite Princeton student images including Baker. At 9” x 12 ½” with thick covers and “Princeton 1914” in gilt, the large and heavy volume also sports gold leaf edge gilt, with numerous approx 9” x 12” sepia-toned card stock photos. In beautiful overall condition - this may be the best surviving example in existence - there is a name and address handwritten to the first page along with "June 5, 1914". The wear includes just minor rubbing to the leather along the top and bottom of the spine. This is just the second example of this desirable Princeton publication we have ever handled, with the other in much lesser condition selling for just over $4,000.00 in 2022.
