Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Found in O-Pee-Chee packs that contained 14 cards and that cost kids/collectors 20 cents during the 1979-80 season were blue-bordered cards like these, with that of Wayne Gretzky surely coveted by season’s end as the scrawny teenage whiz kid from Brantford, Ontario proved he could “play with the big boys”…and how! Nobody totaled more points than Wayne and now no other hockey rookie card carries more appeal among the hobby’s masses than iconic #18, offered here after receiving a mark of VG-EX 4 at PSA headquarters. Just slightly off-center from left-to-right and with light wear to the corners and edges, the card is still a pleasing copy of “The Great One’s” first year offering and retains gorgeous colours for its effort. For the accompanying 395 cards, found to be in the overall high-grade conditions of EX to EX-MT and EX-MT to NM throughout, the key cards include those of 40-Salming (EX-MT to NM), 125-Clarke (EX-MT to NM), 131-Checklist (EX-MT to NM - unmarked and 70-30 centering), 150-Dryden (EX-MT to NM - light "OPC" cut), 160-Dionne (EX-MT - 90-10 centering), 175-Howe (EX-MT to NM - off-center top-to-bottom), 185-Hull (EX-MT to NM), 200-Lafleur (EX to EX-MT - "OPC" cut at bottom right corner), 230-Bossy (EX to EX-MT - light wear to the borders and corners), 237-Checklist (EX-MT to NM - unmarked 80-20 centering) and 346-Checklist (EX-MT to NM - unmarked - 60-40 centering). Of note, the team logo checklist cards that are found between #244 and #261 are also all unmarked as are the checklist cards of the three (3) then new NHL teams, #81, #82 and #163. Additionally, all the other stars are found to be in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set. With the Gretzky securely housed in a PSA holder that remains free from scratches/scuffs, the lucky winning bidder will be pleased with this iconic assembly.
