Serving as the head coach for the Detroit Red Wings from 1947 to 1954 where he won three Stanley Cups, and later as the general manager for the Chicago Black Hawks from 1954 to 1977, where he again hoisted Lord Stanley's hardware in 1961, Tommy Ivan was enshrined in the HOF as a builder in 1974. Playing a key role as chairman of the organizing committee for the 1979–80 Olympic Hockey Festival, helping bring more than 90 players together for Coach Herb Brooks and his staff to pick from for the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" US men's hockey team, Ivan's legacy lived on for a number of years through the Tommy Ivan Trophy that was awarded annually by the CHL to its Most Valuable Player. This lot includes a collection of Chicago Black Hawks documents from 1972 and 1973, totaling 25 and including 13 that are signed by Ivan. The signed documents include 12 on Black Hawks letterhead, mostly regarding player contract information, including for stars Dan Maloney, Ralph Backstrom, Dick Redmond, Darcy Rota, John Garrett, Barry Long, JP Bordeleau and others. There is also a Central Registry document signed by Ivan. All the signatures appear to be in blue ballpoint, with the majority displaying flawlessly. The additional 12 documents include a few on NHL letterhead. Ivan passed away in 1999.
