Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Playing 460 of his 550 games in the National Hockey League in the famed bleu, blanc et rouge of the Montreal Canadiens, Howie Morenz helped the "Flying Frenchmen" to a trio of Stanley Cup championships during his time with the club and won three (3) Hart Memorial Trophy's as the NHL's Most Valuable Player. Having had his numbered retired by the Habs upon his death in 1937, the first time the team had bestowed the honour upon a player, Morenz would go on to be posthumously inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945 as one of the original nine inductees. Pictured here on the front of his 1933-34 World Wide Gum Ice Kings V357, this copy of the desirable cardboard picturing "The Stratford Streak" has been deemed worthy of an EX-MT 6 mark from the graders at SGC many moons ago. Sporting a posed black and white image and wearing his full Montreal Canadiens uniform, the cardboard displays with pleasing centering over the front and retains rather good edges and corners. With a small stain observed over Morenz's right shoulder, the card is housed in an older style SGC holder that shows scuffs and scratches over both sides that are worth mentioning for accuracy.
