Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Inspired by his childhood recollection of Leonardo da Vinci's sketch of an ornithopter flying device, Bob Kane created "the Bat-Man" in response to the request by National Comic Publications (later DC Comics) for more super hero titles after the emergence and popularity of Action Comic's Superman. With the help of collaborator Bill Finger, Kane made preliminary sketches in early 1939, and Batman was born! This limited-edition framed print features some of the early artwork by Kane of the caped crusader, and it has been signed. At 17" x 19", a few detailed sketches of Batman are featured, along with the da Vinci flying device. A 1989 DC copyright appears over the bottom left, with Kane signing over the bottom center in gold. The limited-edition number of "391/500" is handwritten, with a seal from DC placed next to Kane's signature. Framed to full dimensions of approx 24 1/2" x 26", a COA from Warner Bros. is affixed to the reverse of the frame.
