Hailing from a tiny Icelandic Manitoba community named for a Norse god, Tom Johnson patrolled the Montreal Canadiens blueline for over a dozen seasons, and was an integral component to the Habs late-1950s Stanley Cup dynasty. Winning a total of six Cups with Montreal throughout his career, Johnson later won an additional pair with Boston as both assistant general manager in 1970 and Bruins' coach in 1972. From his time with the Beantowners, we have a Prince of Wales Trophy awarded to Johnson for the Bruins first place finish during the 1989-90 regular season according to the affixed plaque (we should note that the NHL awarded the Prince of Wales Trophy to the Wales Conference playoffs champions from 1981-82 to 1992-93, which the Bruins were for this season. The club also happened to be NHL champions. The NHL apparently never changed these plaques since 1966-67, the final year the award was presented for NHL regular-season champions. We previously sold a 2003-04 Tampa Bay Lightning Prince of Wales Trophy with the identical "NHL Champions" plaque, but the Lightning were Wales Conference playoffs champions that season, not NHL regular-season champions). At 13” tall, the silver-plated and wooden miniature replica of the Prince of Wales Trophy displays well, with "HRH Prince of Wales Trophy” and “Tom Johnson” engraved on a detailed plaque on the front side of the 2 wooden base, with “NHL Champions Boston Bruins 1989-90” on the reverse. The trophy displays beautifully, with a light coat of oxidation throughout and a few areas of minor tarnishing, with no detectable dents or damage.
