Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
A veteran of 212 National Hockey League games over the course of nine (9) seasons in the league, Dan Ellis, a product of the USHL and the University of Nebraska-Omaha in the NCAA where he owns many school records, would originally be drafted 60th overall at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars and go on to serve as the backstop for the Stars, Predators, Lightning, Ducks, Hurricanes and Panthers in his career. Offered here, and hailing from the 2012-13 season in which he played in nineteen (19) games, is this mask worn by Ellis as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes. A Bauer model with intact strapping and a chrome cats eye cage over the front, the paint design was executed by famed mask artist DaveArt and is entitled “Hurricane Fishing” with a DaveArt signature appearing just under the mouth while copyright information is found at the back edge on the top of the mask. Featuring a stunning storm design over both sides with each showing a fisherman in either a wooden boat or sitting on a wooden dock beneath an ominous red sky and tattered hurricane warning flags, crashing waves are present over both cheeks and matching Hurricanes logos are found over the jaw on both sides. Showcasing Ellis' number "31" over the chin and a portion of the Charlotte Checkers logo above the eyebrows (Charlotte was Carolina's AHL affiliate at the time and Ellis split time between the AHL and NHL) along with a Bauer wordmark logo, the black coloured backplate features personal notations and memorials that are important to the goaltender in question as well as "Ellis" along the bottom of it. Exhibiting nice use with some marks and abrasions over the shell including a large one over the jaw on the right side, some minor chips are present near the chin as well while the interior shows light-to-moderate soiling and sweat staining. Missing the sweatband over the forehead on the interior, Getty Image #166991175 (April 16th, 2013 vs Ottawa) has been matched to the aforementioned puck mark over the jaw on the right side as well as to the puck mark at the end of the white harness strap over the temple. Additionally, Getty Image #163492077 (March 7th, 2013 vs Montreal) is matched to the now mostly worn away puck mark that is found underneath the vent hole at the bottom of the right ear.
