Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Often regarded as one of, if not the greatest goalie the National Hockey League has ever seen, Terry Sawchuk would backstop Detroit and Toronto teams to the tune of four Stanley Cups and would collect individual accolades via the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year and four Vezina Trophy’s. Tragically passing away in 1970 and posthumously elected to the HHOF in 1971, offered here is this example of Terry's 1958-59 Topps card that has been signed by the legendary netminder. Having been signed by Terry over the yellow portion above his right shoulder with a pen ink signature that displays lightly from age and the style of instrument used, the experts at PSA have deemed both the card and the autograph to be "AUTHENTIC". With the card around the VG to VG-EX range in our option due to some corner and edge wear as well as wax/gum staining on the reverse side. Off center from bottom-to-top over the front side, the card is housed in a PSA holder that has some minor scratches and scuffs over both sides.
Additionally, also included is a program from a 1960-61 exhibition game between the WHL's Vancouver Canucks and the Red Wings that has been signed by Sawchuk as well as Detroit teammates Marcel Pronovost and Val Fonteyne plus coach Sid Abel and manager Jack Adams. In overall rough condition with tears, liquid stains, soiling and paper loss amongst other things, Pronovost, Fonteyne and Abel have signed over pages 12-13 while Sawchuk and Adams have signed pages 14-15. With all the signatures penned in blue ballpoint pen ink, all display well and remain full legible despite the condition of the program that they are signed in.
