This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A chance to score a trio of complete classic O-Pee-Chee offerings from the early-1980s is offered here, through these complete sets of the company's hockey releases that date from 1981-82 to 1983-84. All featuring a total of 396-cards in their checklists and starting with the oldest of the three (3) sets, the 1981-82 release, an overall EX to EX-MT assembly that also includes some EX-MT to NM specimens as well mixed throughout, is marred by around 10% of the set being lower grade cards that are worth mentioning for accuracy. Spearheaded by EX-MT to NM rookie card offerings of 63-Savard, 120-Moog and 148-Murphy, other rookies include those of 107-Kurri (EX to EX-MT - slight corner wear), 111-Coffey (PR to FR - multiple creases) and 269-Stastny (VG-EX to EX - corner wear). For the stars, the sets lead off card of Ray Bourque is found to be in the realm of G to VG shape due to a light surface crease while card #106 of Wayne Gretzky is in the top end condition range of EX-MT to NM, albeit with 80-20 centering over the front. Also including Wayne's "Super Action" card that is seen as being in the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX because of a worn top border and corners, the cards making up the set all have a humidity curve to them and the checklist cards are in a lower grade state with #379 creased and marked, #380 unmarked but creased and #381 marked.
For the 1982-83 release, with the cards once again displaying with a humidity curve, the group is seen as being in the overall grade range of EX-MT to NM with card #14 of Don Marcotte damaged. Including key rookie cards of Grant Fuhr, Dale Hawerchuk (light wax stain on front) and Joe Mullen, all three (3) are in top end neighbourhood of EX-MT to NM while the first year card of Ron Francis is in PR to FR shape because of a large crease, Also featuring EX-MT to NM example of Wayne Gretzky's regular release and "In Action" card, other Gretzky and Star cards are all found to be in the same EX-MT to NM range as well. Additionally, all three (3) of the set's checklist cards are found to be in their original unmarked state.
Finally, for the 1983-84 set, made up of EX to EX-MT and EX-MT to NM cards, card #17 of Billy Smith is damaged while card #22, the Gretzky Leader card is around VG. With all three (3) of the checklist cards unmarked and presenting in a condition scope that is consistent with the rest of the set, the rookie class of 65-Housley, 185-Carbonneau (light wax on front), 268-Lindbergh and 376-Stevens (light wax on front) are all around the top end condition vicinity of EX-MT to NM while the Messier-Gretzky Team Highlights card is also in the same EX-MT to NM range. With Gretzky's main series card closer to the VG range because of corner wear, other cards picturing Wayne as well as other star cards are all in the proximity of EX-MT to NM.
