Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Produced by the Canadian based Willards Chocolate Company, their unnumbered 1923 baseball card release featured a checklist that consisted of 180 total cards with key cards belonging to Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson and of course, Babe Ruth while the set is also anchored by names like Grover Cleveland Alexander, Stan Coveleski, Hugh Duffy, Johnny Evers, Frank Frisch, Kid Gleason, Burleigh Grimes, Harry Hooper, Rogers Hornsby, Miller Huggins, Connie Mack, Branch Rickey, and Tris Speaker. Inserted one (1) card per package of their products, the set’s unique imagery has kept the Willards Chocolate issue extremely popular with collectors, and partly as the result of coming from a Canadian manufacturer is seen as being relatively rare. Offered here, we present this bakers dozen lot of 1923 Willard's Chocolates V100 baseball cards. Including a pair of Rogers Hornsby offerings that are seen as being in the grade neighbourhoods of PR (large crease) and FR to G (bottom border "cut") respectively, other notable cards feature the black-and-white imagery of National or Canadian Baseball HOFers Zach Wheat and George Gibson, the Wheat cards are both in the scope of FR to G condition with one sporting two (2) large creases and the other having bad corner damage while the Gibson card is in PR condition with creases and surface damage. For the rest of the cards, included are examples of Ralph Shinners (x2) with one around FR to G with multiple small creases and the other in the PR to FR neighbourhood due to paper loss and a missing corner, William Killefer (FR to G - crease and left border "cut"), Otto Miller (FR to G - large crease at top left corner), C.E. Galloway (FR to G - off-center and corner wear), J. McInnis (PR - heavy crease and ink marks) and lastly G.H. Burns (x2), with one in the proximity of GOOD condition with some corner wear present and the other closer to PR due to a large heavy crease.
