Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
A chance to score a quintet of complete classic O-Pee-Chee offerings from the early-1980s is offered here, through these complete sets of the company's hockey releases that date from 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1984-85. All featuring a total of 396-cards in their checklists and starting with the oldest of the three (3) sets, the 1982-83 assembly is found to be in an overall lower grade state throughout, marred by corner wear and creases while the checklists remain all unmarked. Led by a rookie class that includes Grant Fuhr (FR to G - creased), Ron Francis (GOOD - crease), Joe Mullen (VG to VG-EX - corner wear) and Dale Hawerchuk (GOOD - crease), "The Great One" is also notable amongst the key cards, with his image gracing the front of card #106 (VG to VG-EX - corner ding at top left) and #107 ("In Action" - EX-MT to NM).
For the 1983-84 set, an overall inconsistent offering that sees its cards range from mostly VG-EX all the way up to EX-MT for their efforts, some creased cards are condition exceptions and seen throughout while all the checklist cards are unmarked. Including an EX-MT to NM first year example of Scott Stevens, other notable rookies include those of 185-Carbonneau (GOOD - rounded corners) and 268-Lindbergh (VG to VG-EX - corner wear). For the rest of the keys, Edmonton Oiler teammates Wayne Gretzky (#29 - tiny bottom left corner ding) and Mark Messier (#39 - tiny top right corner ding) are seen in the scope of EX-MT condition while the pair are also pictured on the Oilers "Team Highlights" card that is found at #23 in the checklist and presents in the vicinity of GOOD condition while being creased. Once again, all the checklist cards are unmarked.
Lastly, the 1984-85 set is an overall EX to EX-MT condition range grouping of cardboard with some cards throughout being seen with corner wear that is worth noting for accuracy. Led by the rookie card of Steve Yzerman, which is viewed in the scope of EX-MT condition with slight corner fuzz, other rookie cards include those of Doug Gilmour (GOOD - crease at bottom right and corner wear), Pat Lafontaine (EX-MT - slight corner fuzz), Cam Neely (VG to VG-EX - corner wear) and Chris Chelios (EX-MT to NM). Rounding out the keys, 243-Gretzky is found to be in the neighbourhood of EX with centering issues and slight corner wear while the checklist cards include #394 (marked), #395 (unmarked - corner ding) and #396 (unmarked - creased).
