Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/25/2024
Drafted 119th overall by the New York Rangers in 1980 and playing a total of 446 games over the course of his National Hockey League career, Reijo Ruotsalainen would don the uniforms of both the Rangers, New Jersey Devils and Edmonton Oilers over that time, winning Stanley Cup championships with Edmonton in 1987 and 1990. Registering a 13 points in 22 games played during the 1990 Stanley Cup Playoffs that would see the Oilers knock off the Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals, offered here is this custom varsity jacket that was presented by the Oilers to Ruotsalainen. Made by Roots, with two (2) of the company's patches sewn on to the interior, the wool and leather garment is decorated over the front with "Oilers" in layered felt and chenille letters that have been individually affixed in a gentle arch while "Roots" is spelt out on the reverse in layered leather letters that have been applied in matching style. Featuring a blue wool body and navy sleeves, the snap buttons down the front are orange in colour while the hem, cuffs and collar are in a blue, white and orange knit style. Accented over the left sleeve with other layered felt and chenille patches in the form of "Reijo", "90" and the Stanley Cup, which has had a "2" embroidered into it to denote the number of championships Ruotsalainen had won with the Oilers during their dynasty years, the right sleeve features Ruotsalainen's number "26", also done in layered felt and chenille numbers as well as a custom Roots/NHL patch and an additional Roots logo patch as well. Tagged a size "L" on the interior, the piece remains in excellent condition, showing only light wear throughout the exterior and interior with no unsightly flaws being observed and comes with the original Roots garment bag as well.
Additionally, also included with the jacket is the Oilers jersey worn by Ruotsalainen during the farewell night of Rexall Place, the longtime home of the Oilers, on April 6th, 2016. Made by Reebok and featuring brand plus size "L" tagging affixed to the inner collar and over the lower hem, a familiar Oilers team crest in tackle twill with embroidered details is seen over the front while a Rexall Place "Farewell Night" patch has been added over the right breast. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Ruotsalainen's number "26" and having had "Ruotsalainen" spelt out over the affixed nameplate on the upper reverse the jersey remains in excellent condition, sporting just a couple of small fabric snags and has been signed by the likes of Eddie Mio, Ken Linseman, Paul Coffey, Craig Simpson, Craig McTavish and others. Hailing from his personal collection, the lot is accompanied by an LOA signed by Ruotsalainen
