Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Often regarded as the best goaltender in the history of the National Hockey League, Martin Broduer would play a total of 22 years in the NHL with all but one (1) of them seeing him wear the red, black and white colours of the New Jersey Devils. The NHL's all-time wins leader with 691 of them to his credit, along with a bevy of other records and awards, including three (3) Stanley Cup championships, Brodeur would be inducted into the hallowed halls of the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017. Offered here, we present this stick used by Broduer during the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs that has been photo-matched to Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Rangers and was the one in his hand during his famed "scorpion" save on Marian Gaborik. A Sher-Wood made MB30 model twig in New Jersey's red, black and white colours, a "Brodeur" identifier sticker is affixed over the upper shaft while Martin's personal logo is observed throughout as well. Retaining its original tape job of white cloth over the blade and red cloth finished with white sock tape on the upper shaft, a white cloth wrapping graces the knob as well along with a hand written annotation reading "NYR 2" in black marker ink. Exhibiting excellent game-use via puck marks over both sides of the paddle, shaft, blade tape and untaped sections of the blade, red post paint transfer marks are observed over the upper shaft and dried gripping agent is felt/seen on the shaft as well. With light wear to the bottom of the blade and heel as well as a large cut to the blade tape on the forehand side, large surface abrasions/paint chips are found over the forehand side of the heel and paddle as well. Regarding the afformentioned photo-match, the stick is matched with Getty Image #144644269 (May 16th, 2012 vs New York - 2012 Eastern Conference Finals Game 2) to various puck marks and surface abrasions/chips on the blade, heel and paddle as well as to the ripped tape on the forehand side of the blade as well.
