Released a year after Wayne Gretzky arrive on the NHL scene and changed the overall landscape of the game, O-Pee-Chee’s 1980-81 hockey card effort is highlighted by Wayne’s second-year card, his four other appearances and the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Ray Bourque and Mike Gartner. With a checklist that features a total of 396 cards, offered here is this complete assembly of O-Pee-Chee's 1980-81 release. Found to be in an overall uniform and consistent condition range of VG to VG-EX and VG-EX to EX with most of the cards impacted by light corner wear, the rookie class is paced by the likes of card #40, the first-year cardboard of Ray Bourque, that is seen as being in the range of VG to VG-EX condition due to corner wear while cards 195-Gartner (corner wear and top right corner ding), 289-Messier (off-center, corner wear and corner ding) and 344-Langway (top border dent) are all in the scope of G to VG. Also including a FR to G copy of card #67, the rookie of Michel Goulet, that is creased and has damage to its top border, the set's second card on the checklist, the "Rookie Record Breaker" of Ray Bourque presents in the vicinity of VG to VG-EX with corner wear worth pointing out for accuracy. For the other notable cards, Wayne Gretzky's main series offering is listed as card #250 and is seen as being in the proximity of G to VG because of corner wear while other cards of "The Great One" include those of 3-Record Breaker (VG-EX to EX) 87-All-Star (VG-EX to EX - light corner wear), 162-Assist Leaders (VG-EX to EX), 163-Scoring Leaders (VG to VG-EX) and 182-Oilers Team Checklist/Team Goals Leader (VG-EX to EX - 80-20 centering). With the three (2) main series checklist cards all unmarked and in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set like the other stars also found in the checklist, the team leader checklist offerings are also all unmarked except for #106-Flames that has had one box on the reverse erased. Additionally, card #186 of Greg Malone has ink damage that is worth mentioning for accuracy. Overall, a satisfying offering that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
