Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023

Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring beautiful colours and edges that have largely avoided the rough cut edges that O-Pee-Chee issues of the era are known for, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky has been deemed worthy of PSA's NM-MT 8 mark after their inspection of the treasured cardboard. With the card sporting an image that is off-center from left-to-right, as evident by the "(OC)" qualifier that is observed over the label at the top of the old school PSA holder, the card also displays with clean surfaces and sharp corners that show just slight wear all the way around. Also including a group of thirty-seven (37) other graded cards, all of which have been inspected by PSA, to complement the complete set of raw offerings other than the previously mentioned Gretzky rookie, the group includes NM 7's of 101-Savard, 135-Lapointe, 180-Perreault, 230-Bossy, 248-Rockies, 250-Kings and 256-Penguins while the majority of the group, made up of NM-MT 8's features the cardboard of 70-Potvin, 80-T. Esposito, 90-Shutt, 125-Clarke, 130-Gillies, 140-Barber, 155-Mikita, 160-Dionne, 163-Whalers Checklist, 170-Gainey, 185-Hull, 200-Lafleur, 206-Smith, 215-Federko, 225-Ratelle, 244-Flames, 246-Sabres, 249-Red Wings, 251-North Stars, 252-Canadiens, 253-Islanders, 254-Rangers, 255-Flyers, 257-Blues, 259-Canucks, 260-Capitals and 279-Keon. Finally, the last three (3) slabbed offerings include those of 153-McDonald, 245-Bruins and 247-Black Hawks, all of which have been deemed worthy of PSA high-grade mark of MINT 9. For the other 395-cards making up the rest of the complete set, all of which still exist in a raw ungraded state, the assembly seems to generally be in the vicinity of EX and EX-MT condition with some examples, both on the better and lesser ends of the grading spectrum, spread throughout the group as well, impacted by things such as corner wear, centering issues and the rough cut edges O-Pee-Chee releases of this era are known for. Additionally, the three (3) main series checklist cards all present in the same condition neighbourhoods as their notable counterparts and remain in an umarked state along with the team checklist cards as well. A satisfying offering that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
