Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/29/2023
Created with the relocation of the unsuccessful Los Angeles Sharks to the Detroit area following the 1973-74 WHA season, the Michigan Stags lasted a mere 43 games before folding due to financial difficulties in January of 1975. As such, any and all surviving Stags jerseys are especially rare and sought by collectors. Offered here, we present this Stags jersey worn by goaltenders Jim McLeod and Gerald (Gerry) Desjardins during the team's lone season of 1974-75. Featuring Wilson tagging that displays a size "50" designation affixed to the inner collar, the heavy dureen knit garment is decorated over the front with a gorgeous Stags team crest that features heavily embroidered details throughout. Accented over the sleeves and verso with McLeod's/Desjardins' number "1" in tri-layer stacked tackle twill numerals, "McLeod" is spelt out in single layer black twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate across the top of the back while the previously applied "Desjardins" nameplate can be seen underneath on the interior. Desjardins started the season wearing #1 and switched to #88 during the season, this is when McLeod started wearing the #1 which he wore the prior season with the LA Sharks. Having once utilized a garter style fight strap on the interior that has been cut out, the jersey exhibits light game-wear via a few puck marks over the front and inside of the left sleeve while a number of small spot stains are present thought the body and sleeves of the piece as well. Of note, both cuffs as well as the hemline is a bit more stained then the rest of the jersey while the white of the material has aged to a light cream colour over time. Showing a small area of red post paint transfer at the reverse hem, a small amount very light pilling plus a few loose threads are seen on the interior as well.
