Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
With the decade of the 1970s known as one of dominance by team such as the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers, the 10-year period also brought along with it the introduction of the WHA to serve as a rival league to the National Hockey League. Also helping introduce some neat collectables during its seven (7) year period of play, offered here is this collection of 1973-74 WHA posters by O-Pee-Chee that includes two (2) sets of twenty (20) as well as thirteen (13) extras. With both sets featuring such as Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Gerry Cheevers as well as the "Howe Line" of Mark, Marty and Gordie, the posters all measure out to dimensions of 7-1/2” by 12-1/2” for their efforts. WIth the first set presenting in a fairly high-grade condition range while exhibiting the normal fold lines that are seen over each one, some show some light toning in a spot of their reverse due to where the gum in the pack once was while a couple also show things such as fold lines that aren't from being in a pack and edge dings/very very small tears. For the second set, the assembly presents much the same way as the first but a bit worse off due to the same things listed above as well as some heavier toning the affects some of the twenty included examples and light corner wear. Of note, a couple of the second set posters also have small fold lines in the corners and heavier gum staining on their reverses. Moving on to the extra posters/partial set that is also present and accounted for that includes examples of 1-Smith, 2-Tremblay, 3-Dufour, 4-Stapleton, 5-Paiement, 6-Cheevers, 7-Pinder, 8-Carleton, 10-Lacroix, 14-The Howes, 16-Hull, 17-Bordeleau and 19-Campbell, most are in a low-grade condition state and are affected by things such as toning, staining, fold lines and edge/corner wear. Rounding out the lot, accompanying the posters picturing the stars of the "Rival League" is some NHL flair via complete groups of the 1977-78 OPC Team Cards (#322 to #339) and 1978-79 OPC All-Star Cards (#325 to #336) that all appear in the condition range of VG-EX to EX for the most part with many affected by toning and the rough cut edges that O-Pee-Chee releases of the era are plagued by though some are in a better state, around EX to EX-MT.
