Featuring a barrage of colourful backgrounds and posed portrait style images, Topps' hockey release for the 1970-71 season stayed true to itself with a checklist that featured as total of 132-cards. Offered here, is this near-complete assembly of Topps' 1970-71 hockey release that sports 120 of the 132-cards that are found within the checklist with all of the included cards having been signed by the player that is featured over the front. Missing only the cards of 18-Martin, 21-Edwards, 46-Goldsworthy, 59-Horton, 76-Hicke, 77-Andrea, 88-Woytowich, 93-McCreary, 105-Gamble, 115-Sly, 123-Terbenche and 128-Fleming for completion, the near-set is paced by PSA graded specimens of key cards depicting players such as Bobby Orr (HOF 1979 - PSA EX 5), Gordie Howe (HOF 1972 - Dec. 2016 - PSA EX-MT 6), Gilbert Perreault (RC - HOF 1990 - PSA VG-EX 4), Stan Mikita (HOF 1983 - Dec. 2018 - PSA EX-MT 6 - AUTO 8), Frank Mahovlich (HOF 1981 - PSA EX 5 - AUTO 7) and Phil Esposito (HOF 1984 - PSA NM 7 - AUTO 10) with all of the autographs gracing their fronts, a mix of vintage and modern signed signatures, also been certified by PSA/DNA as well. With the rest of the PSA graded offerings including the cards of players such as Gerry Cheevers (HOF 1985 - PSA EX-MT 6 - AUTO 9), Johnny Bucyk (HOF 1981 - PSA EX 5 - AUTO 10), Wayne Cashman (RC - PSA NM-MT 8 - AUTO 9), Don Awrey (PSA VG-EX 4 - AUTO 10), Fred Stanfield (Dec. 2021 - PSA EX-MT 6 - AUTO 9), Ken Hodge (PSA EX-MT 6 - AUTO 10), Garnet Bailey (Dec. 2001 - PSA VG-EX 4), Danny Grant (Dec 2019 - PSA NM-MT 8 - AUTO 8), George Armstrong (HOF 1972 - Dec. 2021 - PSA NM 7 - AUTO 9), Wayne Maki (Dec. 1974 - PSA NM-MT 8 - AUTO 9), Doug Mohns (Dec. 2014 - PSA EX-MT 6 - AUTO 7) and Pat Stapleton (Dec. 2020 - PSA VG-EX 4 - AUTO 10), once again, all the signatures are done in a mix of vintage ballpoint pen/marker and modern marker ink with all having been certified by PSA/DNA.
For the rest of the cards, all found to be in their raw ungraded form, the group of key's is paced by EX-MT to NM range offerings of 49-Vachon (HOF 2016), 51- Savard (HOF 1986), 55-Beliveau (HOF 1972 - Dec. 2014) and 132-Checklist (Unmarked - Signed over the front by Al MacNeil) while also including EX to EX-MT range cards of 50-Cournoyer (HOF 1982 - factory print line on the reverse), 63-Gilbert (HOF 1982 - Dec. 2021 - light corner wear), 68-Giacomin (HOF 1987 - light surface line and slight corner wear), 78-Parent (HOF 1984 - very light surface line) and 120-Quinn (HOF 2016 Builder - Dec. 2014 - slight corner wear). Rounding out the keys, the cards of Bobby Hull (corner wear) and Brad Park (corner wear - hologram affixed to reverse), one of the key RC's in the set, are both seen as being in the scope of VG to VG-EX condition while the cardboard of Gump Worsley (light top left corner crease - JSA sticker on reverse) presents around the neighborhood of GOOD for its effort.
For the remaining bulk of the cards making up the group, all found in raw ungraded from and featuring a mix of vintage and modern penned signatures over their fronts, the balance of the cards are generally seen as being in a mid-grade range condition state with some better of examples mixed in along with some that fall below the commonly seen standard that is present throughout. Including examples of Hall of Famers such as; Bob Pulford (HOF 1991), Jacques Lemaire (HOF 1984), Harry Howell (HOF 1979 - Dec. 2019) and Norm Ullman (HOF 1982) while deceased players who's signatures are found over their cards in the set include the likes of; Johnny McKenzie (Dec. 2018), Lou Angotti (Dec. 2021), Jim Pappin (Dec. 2022), Eric Nesterenko (Dec. 2022), Bob Baun (Dec. 2023), Larry Jeffrey (Dec. 2022), Dave Amadio (Dec. 1981), Gilles Marotte (Dec. 2005), Eddie Shack (Dec. 2020), Ross Lonsberry (Dec. 2014), Bob McCord (Dec. 2016), Leo Boivin (HOF 1986 - Dec. 2021), Charlie Burns (Dec. 2021), Jacques Laperrierre (HOF 1987), Ralph Backstrom (Dec. 2021), Bob Nevin (Dec. 2020), Dave Balon (Dec. 2007), Ron Stewart (Dec. 2012), Arnie Brown (Dec. 2019), Carol Vadnais (Dec. 2014), Joe Szura (Dec. 2006), Larry Hillman (Dec. 2022), Bill Sutherland (Dec. 2017), Jean-Guy Gendron (Dec. 2022), Al Smith (Dec. 2002), Ken Schinkel (Dec. 2020), Barclay Plager (Dec. 1988), Gary Doak (Dec. 2017) and André Boudrias (Dec. 2019).
