Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Hailing from an era of the National Hockey League that can be described as being dominated by a man named Wayne Gretzky due to the numbers he, as well as the Edmonton Oilers as a whole were putting up on the board, offered here is this lot consisting of complete sets of Topps’ 1981-82 and 1986-87 hockey releases. Starting with the older of the two, the ’81-82 set, the company broke its hockey set into two regions, designating certain cards as either East or West, they were distributed in two separate types. With each set featuring 132-cards for a total of 264 in the checklist, the group featured here is found in an overall fairly uniform condition range of EX-MT to NM for its effort with the checklists remaining unmarked. Including the key rookie cards of 18-Kurri, 39-Stastny, 75-Savard, 100-Murphy and 105-Ciccarelli as well as the star offering of 16-Gretzky, all are found in the previously mentioned range of EX-MT to NM.
For the 1986-87 release, featuring a total of 198-cards in its checklist, the assembly is once again found in the high-grade condition range of EX-MT to NM for its effort with both checklist cards remaining unmarked. Including the rookie cards of 9-Vanbiesbrouck, 53-Roy and 149-Clark as well as the star cards of 3-Gretzky and 11-Yzerman all in the aforementioned desirable condition range, it is worth mentioning that card #122 of Mario Lemieux is a condition exception due to a light gum stain on the reverse and presents in the scope of EX to EX-MT because of it. Additionally, the 1986-87 release also includes a complete 33-sticker set as well.
