Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Established in 1956 to play in the newly formed but very competitive Eastern Senior “A” loop, the Belleville McFarland's would play a total of five (5) seasons before disbanding, winning the J. Ross Robertson Cup and Allen Cup in 1958, earning the right to represent Canada at the 1959 World Ice Hockey Championships where they would win gold over the Soviet Union and the host, Czechoslovakia. Offered here, we present this seldomly relic of the past in the form of a Bellville McFarland's jersey dating from the late-1950s that was gifted by Red Berenson to notable Czech hockey player, Vlastimil Bubnik at the 1959 World Championships. Made of a full wool construction, the sweater is found to be void of any tagging or labels but measures out to roughly a size "46" for its efforts. A scarlet red coloured garment with alternating black and white stripes on the sleeves and over the hem, the classic tie-neck style sweater is decorated with "McFarland's" over the front in individually sewn on black-over-white felt letters while the number "12" is affixed to the reverse in matching style. Certainly showing its age with numerous holes present throughout both the body and sleeves, with the heaviest clusters of them seen around both elbows, numerous team repairs decorate the front, reverse and sleeves as well while the red colouring has bled into the white stripes and the metal grommets at the collar have both oxidized and rusted with one also coming free at the top. A beautiful survivor from the heyday of Senior level hockey, don't miss out on this one! Of note, the jersey was not worn by Berenson, as he only joined the Belleville squad for the World Championships (the photo in the listing of him in a dark red jersey is different than the one being offered based on the holes seen in the image), and Bubnik was not on the Czechoslovakian roster but was likely in attendance at the games.
