Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Known in French Canada as “Le Gros Bill” and often regarded (with little opposition we may add) as one of the ten greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League, Jean Beliveau would win an astounding seventeen (17) Stanley Cup championships throughout his life in hockey including ten (10) as a player for the storied bleu, blanc et rouge. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 and honoured with the NHL's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, offered here is this collection consisting of three (3) Jean Beliveau scrapbooks that includes one from the early-1950s from his days with the Quebec Aces in the Quebec Senior Hockey League that was put together by both Jean and his wife Elise. Filled over each and every page with numerous news clippings in the form of both articles and photographs that feature the hockey legend, the personal edition, done up in a lovely hardcover book, measures roughly 10" x 15" and is dated "Tuesday June 12th, 1951" inside the front cover, which also features the fountain pen signatures of both Jean and Elise that display well and without issue. With the personal book also having had advertisements from Laval Dairy affixed to the interior as well as hand written notations and drawn artwork, the other two books, likely done by children that were fans of his and featuring news clippings and photos on the interior are dated on the covers as housing articles and images from 1964-68 and 1966-68 respectively. All contained within simple Hilroy made scrapbooks that measure roughly 10 1/2" x 15", both remain in good condition and show the expected handling plus age wear with a couple pages of each on the interior having come away from the spines over the years. With the personal book accompanied by an LOA that has been signed by Jean, also included with the lot is a framed scrapbook cover page done by Jean and Elise that is dated "Wednesday Sept 5th, 1951" with both having signed the page with fountain pen signatures like the one mentioned previously, with both displaying without issue. Featuring an image of the couple that has been pasted over the page, the piece is housed in a frame the shows light wear to the edges and corners and measures approx 18" x 22".
