Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Released a year after Wayne Gretzky arrive on the NHL scene and changed the overall landscape of the game, O-Pee-Chee’s 1980-81 hockey card effort is highlighted by Wayne’s second-year card, his four other appearances and the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Ray Bourque and Mike Gartner. Comprised of 396 total cards that fall into the overall condition range of EX to EX-MT for its effort with light corner wear on many of the cards keeping them below that NM threshold, the checklist cards found at #123, #257 and #396 are all unmarked along with the team checklist cards except for #204 picturing Mike Bossy and the New York Islanders which does showcase pen lines on its reverse. With a decent portion of the group being not being spared from O-Pee-Chee’s commonly seen centering issues and rough cut edges that plaque most sets of the era, the set's most important card, that of #250, the second year offering of Wayne Gretzky, shows light corner wear and is in the scope of EX to EX-MT condition while the assembly's rookie class includes the first-year cardboard of #67 Michel Goulet (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), #140 Ray Bourque (VG to VG-EX - bottom right corner wear/ding), #195 Mike Gartner (EX to EX-MT - light corner wear), #289 Mark Messier (EX-MT - very slight corner wear) and #344 Rod Langway (VG-EX to EX - corner wear). For the rest of the notable offerings making up the set, cards of "The Great One" total five (5) and include those of 3-Record Breaker (VG to VG-EX - completely off-center), 87-All-Star (VG to VG-EX - corner wear), 162-Assist Leaders (VG-EX to EX - light corner wear), 163-Scoring Leaders (EX-MT to NM) and 182-Team Leaders Checklist (VG-EX to EX - off-center) with Ray Bourque's Rookie Record Breaker card falling into the range of VG to VG-EX and being completely off-center. A pleasing set from the near start of Gretzky's reign as the NHL's top player and the New York Islanders dynasty, don't miss out on this one!
