This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
A chance to score a quintet of complete classic O-Pee-Chee offerings from the early-1980s is offered here, through these complete sets of the company's hockey releases that date from 1980-81 to 1983-84. All featuring a total of 396-cards in their checklists and starting with the oldest of the four (4) sets, the 1980-81 release is found to be in a lower grade state throughout the checklist with many of the cards displaying with corner wear along with some that sport creases as well. With all the checklists having been marked, the set is paced by VG state first year cardboard examples of 140-Bourque (factory print mark at the top border and bottom corner wear) and 289-Messier (light surface scratches) while the RC's of Mike Gartner and Michel Goulet are seen as VG to VG-EX and G to VG respectively with the Gartner having a small oil stain on the reverse and the Goulet a small amount of corner wear. Rounded out by the notable cards of 87-Gretzky All-Star (VG to VG-EX - light corner wear) and 250-Gretzky (2nd year card - light corner wear), the rest of the stars in the checklist are in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set.
Next, the 1981-82 set, presenting in an overall consistent VG-EX to EX range with many of the cards showing with light corner wear, it is worth mentioning that two (2) of the three (3) checklist cards are marked. Including the rookie offerings of Denis Savard (top left corner ding), Jari Kurri (corner wear and completely off-center), Glenn Anderson (top left corner ding and completely off-center), Paul Coffey (small ding top left corner), Andy Moog (light corner wear, off-center and a wax stain) and Larry Murphy (light discolouration at the bottom), all are found to be in the range of VG-EX to EX condition for their efforts while the first-year card of Peter Stastny is viewed in the scope of VG because of a top left corner ding. For the rest of the notables, card #118 of Mark Messier is seen as being in the vicinity of VG-EX to EX condition with light corner wear while his Oilers teammate Wayne Gretzky presents in the neighbourhood of VG to VG-EX, impacted by corner wear and 70-30 centering.
Continuing to the lot's back half, the 1982-83 set, on average an EX-MT to NM assembly with the checklists remaining unmarked, sees EX-MT to NM cards of rookie cards picturing Grant Fuhr, Ron Francis and Dale Hawerchuk (Francis' card features 70-30 centering), while 106-Gretzky, 107-Gretzky IA and 117-Messier are all in the same grade proximity as well. Additionally, the set also includes seven (7) other cards of "The Great One" that are all in the same EX-MT to NM range.
Lastly, the 1983-84 set, an overall EX to EX-MT and EX-MT to NM grouping on average with a small percentage of the cards sporting corner wear and the checklists once again unmarked, includes the rookie cards of 65-Housley (EX-MT to NM), 160-Nicholls (EX-MT to NM), 185-Carbonneau (PR - creases), 193-Naslund (EX to EX-MT - top right corner fuzz), 268-Lindbergh (EX to EX-MT - slight corner wear) and 376-Stevens (EX-MT to NM) as well keys such as 23-Messier/Gretzky (EX-MT to NM), 29-Gretzky (EX to EX-MT - slight corner wear top right) and 212-Gretzky RB (EX-MT to NM) while the set also features six (6) other Gretzky specimens.
