Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
A chance to score a trio of complete O-Pee-Chee hockey offerings from the mid-to-late-1970s is offered here, through these assemblies of the company's 1975-76, 1977-78 and 1978-79 sets up on the auction block. Starting with the oldest of the three (3) offerings, the 1975-76 set is found to be in the overall uniform condition range of EX to EX-MT with a few better ones mixed throughout. For the key cards, the group is paced by EX-MT to NM offerings of 100-Orr, 140-Dionne (infamous OPC cut edges), 199-Gillies RC), 200-Esposito (small amount of corner wear at the top right) and 241-Robinson (small amount of corner wear at the top right) while card #35 of Montreal Canadiens goalie, Ken Dryden, is found to be in the scope of EX-MT, a bit worse off due to very slight amounts of corner wear at both the top right and bottom left points. Rounded out by EX to EX-MT cards of 150-Sittler (small ding at top left corner), and 288-Orr AS (light corn er wear all the way around) and a VG-EX to EX specimen of Guy Lafleur (corner wear all the way around), it is worth mentioning for accuracy that the checklist cards are all marked as are the team checklist cards as well while the other stars featured in the checklist are in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set.
Continuing on to the 1977-78 set, featuring a checklist that includes 396 total cards (something consistent with all three of the included sets in the lot), the group is found to be in an overall condition range of VG to VG-EX with some EX examples present as well, with most of the cards affected by things such as corner wear and some creasing. With two (2) of the three (3) main series checklists marked and all the team checklist cards marked as well, the team logo subset is also present with card #339 of the Washington Capitals showing damage on its reverse. Led by the key cards of #105 Bryan Trottier and #251 Bobby Orr (light corner wear) in the scope of EX to EX-MT and VG-EX to EX conditions respectively, other notable keys found to be a bit worse off, falling towards VG to VG-EX include the likes of 170-T. Esposito (corner wear), 195-Mikita (corner wear and a wax stain), 200-Lafleur (corner wear) and 211-Palmateer RC (corner wear). Also including G to VG examples of 100-Dryden (miscut) and 229-Smith (corner ding plus wear), the set is rounded out by a PR copy of Mike Milbury's rookie card that sports creases.
Finally, for the 1978-79 release, presenting in a fairly consistent grade neighbourhood of VG-EX to EX with corner wear and some creasing present on the cards throughout the set, the checklist cards are all marked as are most of the team checklist cards. Including a VG-EX to EX copy of Mike Bossy's key rookie card that presents with 80-20 centering and a corner ding, the rest of the notables are led by EX to EX-MT cards of 168-Wilson RC (light discolouration at top border) and 300-Orr (light corner wear) while card #50 of Ken Dryden is found to be in an EX-MT vicinity state with very small corner ding at the top left. Including a VG-EX to EX card of 10-Trottier (light corner wear) and VG to VG-EX cards of 1-Bossy Highlights (corner wear), 143-Federko RC (off-center and top right border damage) and 353-Taylor RC (light corner wear, minor water stain at bottom right), the set rounded out by a copy of Brain Sutter's RC that is found in the range of G to VG condition that has a stain at the top border. Additionally, all the other stars are in a condition consistent with the rest of the set.
