Marking the first-time of the then nearly 100-year history of the National Hockey League that a game had been played outdoors, November 22, 2003 saw the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens made NHL history by playing the league's first ever modern era outdoor game in front of 57,000 plus freezing fans in Commonwealth Stadium with millions more watching around the world on television. Featuring a bevy of activities and alumni celebrations, offered here, we present this 2003 Heritage Classic custom varsity jacket presented to Oilers alumni member Esa Tikkanen. Made by Roots, brand, NHL and size "XL" tagging is affixed to the inner collar of the garment with Esa's number "10" penned to the size tag in black marker. A varsity style offering made of wool and leather, the front of the piece is decorated with layered felt and chenille Heritage Classic crest over the left breast while "Roots" is embroidered over the right. With the reverse sporting an Oilers team crest that features chenille and embroidered details and is flanked around the outer edge by the embroidered flags of Canada, the United States, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland and Russia, the jacket is accented over the right sleeve with a Stanley Cup champions patch that displays an image of the Cup as well as lists all the years Edmonton hoisted the coveted trophy while the left sleeve features "Oilers" spelt out in a white leather layer script that has been sewn on. With knitted elements at the cuffs, collar and hem, leather accents line the edges of both pockets while a quilted liner is seen on the interior and white snap buttons down the front. Remaining in excellent condition with just light wear exhibited and displaying no unsightly flaws whatsoever, the jacket hails from Tikkanen's personal collection and is accompanied by his signed LOA.
