Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
The third hockey card set ever released by Canadian company Parkhurst, the 1953-54 release saw the size increase as well as better quality images over the front and more informative bios and stat lines over the reverses. Offered here, is this near-complete set of the hobby favourite 1953-54 set. Missing cards 4-Flaman, 96-Dumart, 97-Martin and 99-Gardner for completion but including all the notable cards that are found within the checklist, the assembly is found to be in an overall uniform condition range of VG to VG-EX though it is worth noting that many of the key cards and notables are in a lower-grade state. Featuring a VG to VG-EX copy of card #56, the rookie of Andy Bathgate, that serves as the groups condition leader despite a small gum stain on the back, card #26 of Doug Harvey is also found in the same shape and presents with light corner wear. Featuring G to VG cards of 11-Armstrong (corner wear and corner crease), 13-Horton (small corner stain top right), 50-Howe (corner wear) and 53-Worsley RC (tiny left border crease), cards seen as being in the neighbourhood of GOOD include those of 27-Beliveau RC (corner wear/damage and a bottom right border scratch), 29-Geoffrion (corner wear), 46-Sawchuk (small crease top right) and 47-Delvecchio (very small left border crease). Rounded out by FR to G vicinity cards of 1-Lumley (corners and border wear), 24-Richard (multiple light creases), 28-Moore (creased), 30-Lach/Richard (creased), 52-Lindsay (creased), 57-Howell RC (light crease plus corner wear/damage) and 100-Quackenbush (crease plus corner wear/damage), it is worth noting that within rest of the set there are eight (8) "light" backs that are in a bit better condition than most of the other cards. Additionally, also accompanying the assembly is the album offered via promotion on the back of the 1953-54 cards by Parkhurst to store that years bounty. In overall good condition and free of large unslightly flaws for the most part, creasing and toning is observed throughout as well as a small tear at the top of the spine. With more creasing and tape residue on the edges of the interior covers, all eleven (11) pages meant to house the cards are also present and accounted for, remaining in excellent condition with just some toning observed. A classic offering from the golden era of the Original Six, don’t miss out on these!
