From the dawning of an era that would see Wayne Gretzky rack up record upon record while leading the Edmonton Oilers to multiple Stanley Cup triumphs comes his cherished main series O-Pee-Chee cards from his first and second seasons of play in the National Hockey League, prompting a look back at his wizardry. Four 200-plus point seasons, (when the previous record was Esposito’s 152), a 92-goal campaign (shattering Phil's record of 76), 50 goals in 39(!) games and so many other, until that time, unheard of numbers propelled Wayne's cards to always-in-demand status, with collectors from all segments of the hobby becoming aware in recent times of the importance that "The Great One" holds, even 24 years after his retirement. Offered here, we present this paring of Gretzky cards that is made up of his key 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee rookie card and his second year 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee release. Both having been graded by KSA, the rookie card displays a mark of ENM+ 6.5 over its label and displays with good colours, an image that is off-center from left-to-right, light wear to the corners and the rough cut edges that are commonly seen on OPC issues of the era as well as a small corner ding/fold at the bottom right. For the 2nd year card, deemed worthy of a NM+ 7.5 designation, the card displays with pleasing centering over both sides (a bit off left-to-right and top-to-bottom), light corner wear to all four (4) points and good colours. With both of the holders in good condition, with just some light scratches over both to make you aware of, don't miss out on this pair of all-important specimens for your all-important collection!
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by KSA may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
