Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
77 cards larger than the set from the previous season, the 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee release rang in at 341 total cards, the biggest set released by the Canadian manufacturer up to that point and came at an important time in hockey history as the WHA entered the professional climate with its first season of play that same year. On the auction block here is this complete set of 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee with the grouping here largely remaining in the EX to EX-MT vicinity with about 50 to 60 cards a bit worse off, falling into the VG-EX to EX neighbourhood. With important second year offerings of Ken Dryden, Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne all in the scope of EX-MT condition, the Dryden card displays a bit off-center over the front which is worth mentioning for accuracy. For the rest of the notables, additional EX-MT examples of 58-Orr Action (slightly off-center), 129-Orr, 230-P. Esposito All-Star and 247-Dryden All-Star are all in the same EX-MT condition neighbourhood while card #14 of Bobby Clarke and #111 of Phil Esposito are seen as being in the range of EX. For the balance of the raw cards, there are approx. 25 cards with a crease including 92-Plante, 190-checklist, 197-Horton, 226-T. Esposito All Star and 228-B. Hull All-Star. For the checklist cards, all are found in an unmarked state and there is an additional copy of card #190 that profiles cards #111 to #209. Overall a pleasing set sure to bring back fond memories of yesteryear for the lucky winner.
