Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Colourfully bordered and condition sensitive, offered here is this complete 1973-74 O-Pee-Chee issue consisting of 264 total cards with those numbered 1 to 132 displaying a grey back on their reverses while most cards numbered between 133 and 264 sport the lighter white backs (approximately 17 of the cards feature a grey back like the first half of the set). Paced by group of four (4) BVG (Beckett) or PSA graded offerings, the set's key rookie cards of Larry Robinson and Billy Smith have both earned marks of NM-MT 8 for their individual efforts with the Smith card also displaying subgrades of Centering 8.5, Corners 7.5, Edges 9 and Surface 8.5 at the bottom of its label as well. Also including slabbed examples of card #30 of Bobby Orr and of #135, the scoring leaders card of Phil Esposito and Bobby Clarke, the Orr has been assessed a grade of NEAR MINT+ 7.5 while the scoring leaders card, the lone PSA graded example, displays an EX-MT 6 mark over its label. For the rest of the set, found in raw ungraded form, about one quarter of the cards making up the assembly are seen as being in the condition range of VG-EX to EX while the rest of them are better off, falling closer to the scope of EX to EX-MT vicinity with some NM examples also present. For the key cards of Hall of Famers such as #17-Dionne, #50-Clarke, #66-Parent, #70-Perrault, #72-Lafleur, #87-Richard and #132-Sittler, all are seen as falling in the EX to EX-MT or better neighbourhood. With the card of Terry O'Reilly a condition exception, closer to the scope of G to VG, all three (3) checklist cards remain unmarked and in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set. Additionally, all the holders for the graded cards remain in good condition and show just a small number of scratches and/or scuffs worth mentioning for accuracy. A fun trip back in time for our lucky winning bidder, the first appearance of OPC team cards is also to note with the ’73-74 set.
