Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Released a year after Wayne Gretzky arrive on the NHL scene and changed the overall landscape of the game, O-Pee-Chee’s 1980-81 hockey card effort is highlighted by Wayne’s second-year card, his four other appearances and the rookie cards of Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Ray Bourque and Mike Gartner. With a checklist that features a total of 396 cards, offered here is this complete assembly of O-Pee-Chee's 1980-81 release. Paced by freshly graded examples of the key rookie cards picturing Ray Bourque (EX-MT 6) and Mark Messier (NM-MT 8) as well as the second year card of "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky (EX 5), the rest of the set generally seems to reflect the condition range of the PSA-graded examples with most of the cards in the scope of EX to EX-MT while some are of a higher grade, like the Messier, and around the scope of NM to NM+ for their effort. With some of the cards sporting the typically seen O-Pee-Chee centering issues of the era as well as the rough cut edges that the company is known for in this era, other key cards include those of 2-Bourque Record Breaker, 3-Gretzky Record Breaker, 87-Gretzky All-Star, 162-Assist Leaders and 163-Scoring Leaders as well as the set's other key rookie cards of #67 Michel Goulet, #186 Mike Gartner and #344 Rod Langway, all of which are in the condition neighbourhood that was previously mentioned, with the rookies on the higher end of the scale, though the Langway example is heavily off-centered. With the three (3) main series checklists all unmarked and in the same grade-range as well as the team checklists, the 70 rookie cards found within the set as well as early career examples from some of the best to ever play in the NHL are sure to make this one appealing to all collectors.
