Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Considered to be the most challenging among the Crescent Ice Cream hockey card issues of the era is this one, with the Winnipeg Tammany Tigers and Winnipeg Falcons joining forces to compete in the Manitoba Senior Hockey League for the 1924-25 season. Originally available with bricks of ice cream and one card, #6 in the checklist was short-printed to reduce the number of prizes the firm had to award, with the player showcased on the front still unknown to this day. All having been inspected and slabbed by SGC and housed in older versions of their holders that remain in good condition with some light scratches and scuffs observed, the company's population report confirms the rarity of the card with between just one and four of each example ever submitted to SGC in the history of the firm. For the assembly offered here, card #8 of Tote Mitchell, one of the founding fathers of the present day Winnipeg Blue Bombers, leads the way condition wise, displaying a mark of VG-EX 4 over its label. For the rest of the group, card's #1 and #5 of Bill Cockburn and Oliver Redpath have both been deemed worthy of VG 3 designations while majority of the set, including the examples of #2 Wally Byron, #3 Wally Fridfinson, #4 Murray Murdock (misspelled “Murdock”), who would go on to be a New York Ranger mainstay and iron man (first NHLer to play 500 consecutive games) and who later coached Yale University for 27 years, #7 Ward McVey, #10 Tony Wise, #11 Johnny Myres, #12 Gordon McKenzie, #13 Harry Neal and #14 Blake Watson, are all specimens seen as GOOD 2. Finally, card #9 of Lorne Carrol rounds out the set, sporting a grade of POOR 1 over its label. Thought-provoking indeed and ready to elevate the importance of your pre-war card shrine.
